68th Masla | Sajday Mai Duaa ka Tariqa (English Sub)

Ask Mufti Tariq Masood “What is the proper way to do dua (supplicate) during sajda (prostration)?”, asks Mr. Ammar from Lahore. “A meaning of one hadith is that, a person is most closest to Allah while in the state of sajda, therefore one should do a lot of dua (while in this state). What does this mean and what is the proper way to do sajda? Some people place their palms on the floor while during sajda, and some raise their palms towards the sky. Which is the right way? Some people do this sajda during nafl prayers? So which method should used be do dua? The first issue is that, a custom has started in our region is that after offering farz or nafl prayers in mosques, people perform sajda to do dua. The fuqaha (Islamic jurists or ulama) have written that any sajda after offering farz or nafl prayers in mosques is makrooh (disliked). This is because after a period of time, people will start to think of this practice as sunnat. And this practice will start in abundance as well. It is important a stop a bidat (innovation) from starting. This is why this practice should be abandoned. Performing sajda after offering prayers in mosques should not be done. So that people don’t think of this practice as sunnat. However, performing sajda under routine circumstances is permissible. But the sunnat way of performing sajda is not like this, that the hands are gestured in this way; but the way of the sunnat is that the hands are placed like this during sajda. And how will one do dua during sajda? It is in the hadtih that, a person is most closest to Allah while in the state of sajda; and duas are accepted. So, if we take all the hadith, in the faraiz (plural of farz), what is authenticated through the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and also what is ordered by him is that, (In Arabic) When this Quranic ayat (verse) was revealed: (In Arabic) The Prophet Muhammad said (in Arabic), that bring this in your sajda. So what we found out is that the usual practice of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) in farz prayers, and also what he has ordered is, is that “Subhaana Rabbi Al-A’laa” should be recited during sajda. So if one says dua in Arabic is also permissible. Whether it is farz or nafl prayers, but what is better is that during sajda of farz prayers, one should only be contended to recite “Subhaana Rabbi Al-A’laa” During the sajda of nafl prayers, you should recite “Subhaana Rabbi Al-A’laa”. And after that if you want to recite another dua, you can do so. But, since sajda is a part of namaz (prayer), therefore reciting a dua which resembles the usual conversation of people, is not permissible. Because during prayers, you cannot recite anything which resembles the usual conversation of people, whether you say it in English, Arabic or Urdu. You will recite only those dua that are evidenced through the Quran and the sunnat, so that your recitation does not resemble the common conversation of people. There is a dua (in Arabic). And another dua (in Arabic). And other duas that you are aware of can be recited during the sajda of nafl prayers. These duas can also be recited while doing a sajda separately. But even then, it is better that only those duas should be recited that have been handed down generation by generation. Meaning those duas that have been narrated via the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) or the Quran. Ask Mufti Tariq Masood
